 | Conducting GCP-Compliant Clinical Research Book Description Conducting GCP-Compliant Clinical Research Wendy Bohaychuk and Graham Ball Good Clinical Research Practices, UK and Canada The overall aim of this work is to provide a reference book which describes the general framework for conducting GCP-compliant clinical research, particularly pharmaceutical industry clinical research. Wendy Bohaychuk and Graham Ball run a consultancy, GCRP Ltd., which has conducted over 820 GCP audits involving more than 200 companies in the last 10 years. More than 5,000 individuals have been involved in their training courses to help people perform GCP-compliant clinical research. They have authored several books and articles including: * Standard operating procedures for investigators * Standard operating procedures for sponsors and CROs * GCP - an indexed reference From the Back Cover The overall aim of this work is to provide a reference book which describes the general framework for conducting GCP-compliant clinical research, particularly pharmaceutical industry clinical research. They have authored several books and articles including: Standard operating procedures for investigators Standard operating procedures for sponsors and CROs GCP — an indexed reference Drawing on their wealth of experience, they have produced this enlightening and practical reference work which fills an educational gap in the understanding of GCP at all levels. Written in concise language simple enough to be accessible to those new in the field, the dozens of real-life stories and detailed case studies at the end of each chapter make the book an invaluable resource for the more experienced, highlighting what can go wrong in a clinical study: A study of prostate cancer in the UK - An investigator brochure was not provided. The company argued that a brochure was unnecessary because the drug was already marketed. Indeed it was — for hypertension! A study of cardiovascular surgery in the UK - The consent dates were changed (by overwriting) to indicate that the patients had provided consent before the study started. The original dates post-dated the start of the study. A study of hypertension in Germany - The investigator brochure predated the study by nine years! Checklists are provided throughout the book to help monitors, auditors and investigators ensure that nothing important is overlooked. The authors present the topic of GCP with remarkable clarity, insight and enthusiasm emphasizing that this code of practice was not designed to make studies more difficult for investigators or more expensive for sponsors and CROs but, in the final analysis, to ensure the safety and well-being of study participants and future patients who will benefit from well-conducted, GCP-compliant studies. http://rapidshare.de/files/16535042/Conducting_GCP-Compliant_Clinical_Research.zip.html

 | Novel Vaccination strategy From the New England Journal of Medicine, November 4, 2004 The world of vaccines traditionally has been considered to consist of a very limited number of tools for immunizing humans and animals. In recent years, however, advances in immunology and molecular genetics have permitted the development of innovative ways of inducing protective immunity. Centuries after Jenner's experiment with cowpox, vaccines have become extremely sophisticated weapons against infectious diseases. This book thoroughly reviews our understanding of the immunologic response to infectious diseases and the many recent advances in the development of vaccines. A number of experimental vaccines are discussed, and future strategies that may change the way in which infectious and other diseases will be prevented are also presented. Stefan Kaufmann, who is the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, has brought together a group of experts in various fields of vaccinology from Europe, the United States, and Australia for this challenging project. Immunologists, developers of vaccines, clinical-trial specialists, and molecular biologists will find this book to be of interest. It begins with an engaging presentation about the challenges involved in the development of vaccines, including the search for serologic correlates of protection and the difficulty of developing vaccines for the many pathogens that are not associated with such serologic markers. Another section illustrates in detail the immunologic response to vaccines, beginning with the body's recognition of pathogens and ending with the mechanisms of immunologic memory. Review "The presentations are concise, clear, well illustrated, and provide an excellent survey of the subject overall." (IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology, Jan/Feb 2005) "Dr. Kaufmann and eminent contributors, with their outstanding expertise, created an excellent resource for medical professionals and biomedical scientists." (Annals of Biomedical Engineering, December 2004) "…a practical addition to health sciences libraries. Its usefulness is primarily for basic researchers in vaccinology." (The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, December 2004) "This book thoroughly reviews our understanding of the immunologic response to infectious diseases and the many advances in the development of vaccines." (New England Journal of Medicine, November 4, 2004) "This would be a valuable text for those in the field with the expertise." (E-STREAMS, October 2004) "...enjoyed reading the book immensely, found it very informative and a good mixture of basic and applied science...definitely recommended..." Hospital Medicine His new function differs from the role of the primary care physician, who is responsible for the treatment of patients in all care settings, ranging from outpatient clinics to inpatient service. Those who fill hospital positions often serve the needs of an academic medical center or a managed-care system, and this new kind of practitioner has been dubbed the "hospitalist." http://rapidshare.de/files/22007733/Wachter_-_Hospital_Medicine.pdb
