Medical education has entered the new millennium apace. Small-group, problem-based, multimodal, student-centred, flexible, integrated, interactive educational encounters are now becoming de rigueur. Resuscitation training is ideally suited to these newer educational modalities.
This CD-ROM advanced life support trainer is a superb tool to enhance resuscitation teaching. It was produced with the assistance of the Danish Institute of Medical Simulation, a part of the department of anaesthesiology at the Herlev Hospital, Copenhagen. Since 1992 they have led the way in sophisticated, full-scale simulators teaching doctors and nurses anaesthetic and critical care incident management.
Resus sim 98 is up-to-date, containing the latest Australian Resuscitation Council policies dovetailed around the 1998 European Resuscitation Council guidelines. It is straightforward to set up, and has a menu-driven operation with excellent "hot links" to extensive additional information covering life support guidelines, drugs, equipment, practical procedures and special situations such as hypothermia, drowning and electrocution. A series of case scenarios, with degrees of difficulty ranging from beginner to advanced, allow the student to run a variety of patient events in real time. On completion of each scenario, a debrief is generated, with a log of the decisions made, their relevance and the patient's outcome. At any stage, information may be printed and kept. Despite an eerie lack of sound (apart from the defibrillator charging and the reassuring beeping of sinus rhythm), the program does manage to generate a sense of urgency and effectively portrays the complex array of interconnected decisions required to run a code.
I find it hard to fault this CD-ROM. It is good value, and fills the need for a computer-based CPR learning tool. Combined with tuition and practice in the practical skills involved, with the use of a modern simulator manikin, it would be a valuable addition to multimodal teaching of resuscitation.
