|Primary Care Medicine: Office Evaluation and Management of the Adult Patient|
Primary care clinicians will find Noble's Textbook of Primary Care Medicine a valuable addition to their personal medical libraries. Written by experts throughout the United States, the book addresses the practical, hands-on needs of clinicians wanting to improve their medical skills and knowledge. Although it would be useful for students and residents, the book focuses primarily on issues faced by experienced and busy practitioners. The book also has a companion CD-ROM. The sophistication of the book is evidence of its maturity and growth into a third edition, whereas the CD-ROM displays a surprising degree of amateurism. So, skip the CD-ROM, but strongly consider buying the book.
The book is easy to read. Although the nearly 2000 pages are mostly text, the chapters are nicely complemented by relevant, clear tables and excellent illustrations. Tables are laid out nicely and are easy to comprehend. Graphs and illustrations are clear and professional.
This timely edition of this comprehensive text has been thoroughly revised and updated reflecting the new patient management responsibilities that are dictated by today's health care reform. Highly acclaimed in previous editions, this practical text continues to provide pertinent information on medical diagnosis, therapy, lab tests, and health maintenance. Topics covered in this edition include outpatient management of HIV patients, communication of risks and prognosis, interpreting evidence of therapeutic efficacy, new strategies for hypertension control and hyperlipidemia. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

|Procedural Skills For Internal Medicine, CD|
Procedural skills are more important than ever for practicing physicians. The clinician's skill and judgment in doing a procedure affect patient safety and comfort as well as the quality of the diagnostic samples. With managed care, generalists anticipate doing more procedures rather than fewer. At the same time, accountability is increasing, focusing more attention on credentialling and monitoring of outcomes. The seven procedures on this CD-ROM are those required by the American Board of Internal Medicine as essential to the practice of Internal Medicine. These are the basic procedures for obtaining body fluids for diagnosis and for access for medication and drainage.
This CD-ROM is part of an integrated multimedia learning tool. It uses video movies, sound, color illustrations, and text to present techniques and in-depth information about the seven procedures. Training in the technical and cognitive aspects of procedures is not always available when you need it, and knowledge about indications, complications, and interpretation of results is critical to expert and safe performance. For these reasons, we have made the program both flexible and comprehensive, allowing you to use the program for in-depth study or quick review. The accompanying Reference Manual covers much the same material, but more concisely. Use the Manual for a quick review and a place to keep notes. Use the videos and the CD-ROM text and cases for in-depth learning and review of techniques.
The best way to learn how to do procedures is to observe them being done. We have included over 40 video clips, showing how to do the procedures using different techniques. Hypertext links let you explore each topic in more depth. You can print out items for your own use such as information sheets for patients and nursing staff, patient consent forms, lists of equipment needed, differential diagnoses, and tests commonly ordered. You can modify these forms to fit your needs before printing. For review, check out the quizzes and the clinical case vignettes that are coordinated by section to cover the same material in case example form.
A project of this size and complexity could not have come together without the contributions and creative energies of many people. Stephanie Manning is the editor at Mosby whose vision and encouragement made this project happen. We are indebted to all of the staff at the Section of General Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. In particular, we are indebted to our project coordinator, Wayne Manke, who miraculously kept all of the myriad pieces of the puzzle together and kept us on track. We are grateful to our medical illustrator, Mary Jean McFadden, for her hard work and patient understanding. Thanks go to Kristin Perry and Markey Drake for their many contributions, and to Kathy McCormack and Shirley Yeich for their secretarial help. We are indebted to the residents and faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center who contributed to the video recordings: Drs. Leanna Scott Timperley, James Edney, Nancy Davis, Kristen Fulton, Clinton White, Rifaat Bashir, James Chapin, Barbara Hurlbert, Suzanna VonEssen, Joseph Sisson, and Donald Bennett. We could not have made the videos without the contributions of Mary Williamsen, with her directing, editing, and camera work--at all hours.
We are grateful to the staff at Mosby-Year Book who patiently saw us through the deadlines and polished the rough manuscripts. We thank Laura Berendson for her editorial and organizational skills, Elaine Steinborn for her superb writing skills in crafting the Reference Manual, and Anne Patterson for her support and encouragement. The CD-ROM production is the result of many creative talents at Hands-On Interactive in St. Louis: Chris Ruess, Bill Haines, Kelly Ogonoski, Lance Reidel, Eelin Toh and John Viviano.
This was an exciting adventure that gave us a glimpse of the great potential of these new media for medical education. We thank all of those colleagues, family, and friends who patiently stood by us as we explored these new directions.

The Practitioner's Bible
The first comprehensive textbook of general practice written for Australia, General practice, 3rd edition has retained the successful format of the previous editions. The first, published in 1994, achieved remarkable success on both the national and international scene. The second edition built on this initial success and in an extraordinary way the book became known as the 'Bible of General Practice' in Australia. In addition to being widely used by practising doctors, it has become a popular and standard textbook in several medical schools and also in the teaching institutions for alternative health practitioners, such as chiropractic, naturopathy and osteopathy.
General practice, 3rd edition takes a diagnostic approach to the patient, addresses common symptoms, presents a systematic review of the physical examination, probable causes and treatment strategies. The author has included superb illustrations and an abundance of tables. All chapters have been revised and updated, with a more attractive and user-friendly format.

|Integrated Care for the Complex Medically Ill, An Issue of Medical Clinic|
Saunders| ISBN 1416038884 | 2006 | PDF | 1,7 Mb | 240 Pages
This important issue of the Medical Clinics of North America, edited by Frits Huyse and Friedrich Stiefel, seeks to understand how better to deliver care for the “complex medically ill,” patients who have multiple medical, mental, psychosocial, or functional problems. Rather than focus on specific comorbidities, it addresses the broad themes regarding the identification, assessment, and management of these vulnerable patients. Many of the articles point toward integrated approaches as promising strategies for improving these patients' care.
The articles are written by many of the world's experts on these topics, and provide a combination of conceptual depth and empiric rigor. The international range of authors and study settings are a testament to how themes of complexity and comorbidity cut across multiple countries and settings of care.
The recently-released Institute of Medicine report “Improving the Quality of Health Care for Mental and Substance Use Conditions” found that deficits in quality of care for persons with behavioral conditions were as great or greater than the problems faced by persons with other medical problems. Many of these gaps result from fragmentation within the general and behavioral health system, and between the behavioral health and general medical systems. One of the most promising ways of understanding and improving care across these sectors is to understand and improve care for patients whose needs cut across them. This issue provides an invaluable step in that direction

Venous Thromboembolism: Prevention and Treatment
Pulmonary thromboembolism in Japan is currently associated with a high mortality rate and remains a concern for patients and medical staff alike. Moreover, as the mechanisms of the condition have been elucidated, it has become clear that much work needs to be done in the field to achieve acceptable results in this country. Thus, Japan has regularly played host to the International Symposium on Pulmonary Thromboembolism . At the most recent symposium, in Sendai, the epidemiology and the treatment of pulmonary thromboembolism, traveler's thrombosis, and the prevention of deep vein thromboembolism were discussed, particularly with reference to the differences between Japan and Western countries. The fruits of the collaboration between that assembly of international specialists can be found in this collection of work. It provides an in-depth look at the current concepts that guide the treatment and prevention of the disease, and at the problem areas that must be improved upon.
