Rumination (recyclic negative thinking), is now recognised as important in the development, maintenance and relapse of recurrence of depression. For instance, rumination has been found to elevate, perpetuate and exacerbate depressed mood, predict future episodes of depression, and delay recovery during cognitive therapy.
Cognitive therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression. However, depressive relapse and recurrence following cognitive therapy continue to be a significant problem. An understanding of the psychological processes which contribute to relapse and recurrence may guide the development of more effective interventions.

All of the chapters are good; I will comment on a few I found of particular interest.
The first chapter, The Gate Control Theory: Reaching for the Brain, beautifully written by Ronald Melzack and Joel Katz, should be required reading for anyone conducting pain research or assessing or treating patients with pain. It provides a lucid and concise account of the history of theories of pain and important recent advances in scientific understanding of the role of the brain in the experience of pain. The chapter on biopsychosocial approaches to pain, written by Gordon Asmundson and Kristi Wright, is a comprehensive overview of various conceptual models of pain that involve psychosocial components, including the operant, biopsychosocial, biobehavioral, and fear-avoidance models. Following a description of each of these models is a brief review of empirical support for the model. This chapter concludes with the authors' proposal for an integrated diathesis-stress model of pain. The final two chapters in Pain: Psychological Perspectives are unique. Craig and Hadjistavropoulos provide a thoughtful consideration of current controversies relevant to pain psychology and Hadjistavropoulos discusses ethical issues relevant to psychologists in the assessment, treatment, and study of patients with pain.

Most people think of research in genetics as the search for genes. This is only one focus of effort, and even with the reliable identification of susceptibility genes, the clinical applications of their discovery, such as gene therapies and new drug development, are a long way off. For the present, the impact of genetic research on our understanding of mental illness is tied to our ability to estimate the effect of all genes by means of family, twin, and adoption studies. Of course, the effect of genes is only half the equation. The role of experience, environment, and living conditions accounts for as much, often considerably more, of the variability in psychopathology. In this book, Kerry Jang attempts not to answer questions about what is "genetic" and what is not, but about what a knowledge of the relative influence of genes versus environment means at a psychological level of analysis--to show how it changes common assumptions about classification, etiology, diagnosis, and intervention.

As many as 1 in 30 adults and 1 in 100 children currently suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It is much more common than was previously thought, with up to 2 million people being affected in the UK. Sufferers experience intrusive thoughts and anxieties resulting in compulsive behaviour that can seem bizarre to those that have no experience of the disorder. Why would someone feel compelled to touch the four walls of a room in a clockwise fashion as soon as he enters it? Why would someone look at an object 3 times with his right eye, followed by his left eye?
OCD sufferers are aware that these rituals are excessive and irrational, but they cannot control their behaviour. They are plagued by intrusive thoughts that they cannot banish from their mind and are often tormented by these thoughts which they find profoundly disgusting or upsetting. The cause of OCD is still not known, but it does appear to run in families and can occur together with other disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and Tourette's syndrome.
