Essentials of Neuroimaging: An Issue of Radiologic Clinics

Essentials of Neuroimaging: An Issue of Radiologic Clinics
The goal of this issue was to provide a practical approach to each problem, incorporating relevant clinical and radiologic advances. Trauma is unfortunately all too common, and this is the topic of the first two articles. Over the last several years, cross-sectional imaging requests from our trauma services have been increasing quite steeply, at least partially due to the proliferation of multidetector CT scanners and the wealth of information available with this technique. In the first article, traumatic injury to the spinal column is discussed. This is followed by an article discussing the imaging of neurovascular traumatic injury. Screening for such injuries has become much more aggressive, and yet, widely accepted guidelines for screening are not fully established. In the next two articles, the focus is on the most common mechanisms of nontraumatic brain injury in the adult and pediatric populations: ischemic injury in adults and hypoxic injury with or without hypoperfusion for children. These types of injury can certainly occur in both populations, but the etiologies and resulting patterns and mechanisms of injury are quite different. The next two articles thus focus on adult and pediatric populations separately. In the outpatient setting, two of the most common imaging requests are for cervical node evaluation and multiple sclerosis. These are the topics for the next two articles. Finally, for the benefit of the reader, two additional articles relevant to essential neuroradiology and previously published in Neuroimaging Clinics of North America have been included: one providing an overview of epilepsy and a discussion of MR imaging interpretation in this setting, and the other reviewing imaging of orbital pathology.

Chest Xray made easy

Editorial Description
This handy pocket guide simplifies the interpretation of chest x-rays. It describes the range of conditions likely to be encountered and guides the user through the process of examining and interpreting the film based on the appearance of the abnormality shown. It then helps the user determine the nature of the abnormality and points toward possible differential diagnoses. It gives advice on how to examine an x-ray, how to check its technical quality, and how to identify lesions.

Multidetector CT of the Abdomen

Multidetector CT of the Abdomen
Radiologic Clinics of North America
John R., M.D. Haaga
W.B. Saunders Company;
1st edition (November 15, 2005)
ISBN: 1416027637
Revolutions and evolutions in scientific endeavors have occurred throughout medical history, but the greatest number and most notable in radiology have occurred in the past 30 years with the advent of new electronics, computers, detectors, and contrast agents. When crystal technology and radiographic tube design were primitive, there were theoretical questions posed about the feasibility of real time or fluoroscopic CT.
The conclusion in the early years was that it was impossible to have sufficient photon production and unlikely that crystals could scintillate/reduce afterglow enough to achieve such speed. And now the multidetector CT (MDCT) revolution has begun! Current MDCT scanners have crystal detectors that are 99% efficient and have favorable afterglow properties such that thousands of slices with superior spatial resolution can be achieved.
Acquisition, display, and processing of three-dimensional datasets are routine with separation of different vascular phases during contrast administration. It is ironic that earlier technologies such as DSA were once promoted as a replacement for CT, because the MDCT scanners can now totally replace catheter angiography
for evaluation of the vasculature for many parts of the body, including the lungs and heart. This is the subject of this issue of the Radiologic Clinics of North America.

Medical Radiology / Diagnostic Imaging, Contrast Media
1994 the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR) set up a committee to consider the safety of the contrast media used in radiology departments. Since then, the committee has questioned members, reviewed the literature, proposed guidelines, and discussed these proposals with participants at the annual symposia on urogenital radiology. This book represents the end result of this hard work. It contains all of the agreed guidelines, updated when necessary, and thereby comprehensively covers the many different safety issues relating to the diverse contrast media: barium contrast media, iodinated contrast media, MR contrast media (both gadolinium-based extracellular and organ-specific) and ultrasound contrast media. The prevention and treatment of both acute and delayed non-renal adverse reactions as well as the renal adverse reactions are covered in detail. The inclusion of all the ESUR guidelines within one book will offer an invaluable, unique and unparalleled resource.

Interpreting Chest X-Rays: Illustrated with 100 Cases
Book Description
Interpreting chest X-rays can seem baffling and intimidating for senior medical students and newly qualified doctors. This highly illustrated guide provides the ideal introduction to chest radiology. It uses 100 clinical cases to illuminate a wide range of common medical conditions, each illustrated with a chest X-ray and a clear description of the significant diagnostic features and their clinical relevance. Where appropriate CT scans and bronchoscopic imaging are also included as part of the investigation. Pulmonary medicine is largely based on a strong foundation on the plain chest radiograph. Indeed chest radiography is the single most common investigation done in hospital practice. This illustrated collection of case studies will help make the learning process easier and more enjoyable and less painful. As well as illuminating pearls of core knowledge in chest X-ray interpretation, it highlights some of the pitfalls that might wrong-foot the inexperienced practitioner.

Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine (Medical Radiology / Diagnostic Imaging)
Pages: 362
Publisher: Springer
Publication Date: November 28, 2005 (2nd edition)
ISBN: 3540423095
eBook ISBN: 3540300058
Format: PDF
Size: 7.42 MB (5.00 MB ZIP archive)
Summary:
The field of nuclear medicine is undergoing rapid expansion, and is evolving into diagnostic molecular imaging. During recent years, dual-modality imaging with PET/CT has gained acceptance and this is currently the fastest-growing technique for oncological imaging applications. The glucose analogue FDG has held its place in diagnostic oncology, assessment of myocardial viability and diagnosis of neuro-degenerative disorders. Peptides have become even more important as imaging agents. The accuracy of hepatobiliary scintigraphy has been enhanced by cholecystokinin. The use of ACE inhibitors in the evaluation of renovascular hypertension has become the standard in renography. New instrumentation has led to faster scanners, and computer development to better image processing software. Automatic processing is more common, and standardization of protocols can be accomplished easily. The field of gene imaging has progressed, although routine clinical applications are not yet available. The present text, supplemented with many detailed and informative illustrations, represents an adjunct to the standard knowledge of diagnostic nuclear medicine and provides both the student and the professional with an overview of developments during the past decade.

MCQs for the FRCR
Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are used by many examination boards as a way of testing a broad spectrum of knowledge in an easily administered and unbiased way. They form a critical part of the Royal College of Radiologists Fellowship examinations. In 2002, the structure of the FRCR examination changed, and in response to new EU laws, the Part 1 examination syllabus now comprises questions on the physics and legal regulations surrounding ionizing radiation. This book is the perfect revision tool for candidates sitting the FRCR Part 1 examination and will also prove useful for those who need to acquaint themselves with the new IRMER (Ionizing Radiation (Medical Exposure)) regulations such as radiologists, cardiologists and anyone using ionizing radiation in any form for medical purposes. The book provides 175 questions, in 7 individual examination papers of 25 questions, all with detailed explanatory model answers, checklists and some with diagrams to aid understanding.

Quantitative Analysis in Nuclear Medicine Imaging
Summary:
This book provides a review of image analysis techniques as they are applied in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine. Driven in part by the remarkable increase in computing power and its ready and inexpensive availability, this is a relatively new yet rapidly expanding field. Likewise, although the use of radionuclides for diagnosis and therapy has origins dating back almost to the discovery of natural radioactivity itself, radionuclide therapy and, in particular, targeted radionuclide therapy has only recently emerged as a promising approach for therapy of cancer and, to a lesser extent, other diseases. As effort has, therefore, been made to place the reviews provided in this book in a broader context. The effort to do this is reflected by the inclusion of introductory chapters that address basic principles of nuclear medicine imaging, followed by overview of issues that are closely related to quantitative nuclear imaging and its potential role in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The different chapters discuss the basic principles and various steps required for obtaining quantitatively accurate data from nuclear medicine images including data collection methods and algorithms used to correct them for physical degrading factors (e.g. collimator response, attenuation, scatter, partial volume effect), and image reconstruction algorithms (analytic, iterative) as well as image processing and analysis techniques as their clinical and research applications in neurology, cardiology and oncology. Some algorithms are described and illustrated with some useful features

Imaging of Occupational and Environmental Disorders of the Chest
Book Description
The spectrum of occupational and environmental diseases has changed markedly in recent years. New industrial processes have led to the production and use of a wide range of chemicals, metals, and alloys, an increasing number of which have been reported to cause interstitial lung disease in exposed workers. Thus, while the workforce in coal mining and asbestos handling has decreased, new groups of workers are at risk of exposure to agents potentially responsible for pneumoconiosis. This well-illustrated book, written by internationally acclaimed experts, provides a comprehensive approach to modern imaging of environmental and occupational diseases of the chest. The first part of the book addresses the basic knowledge required to understand imaging in this context, while the second focuses on the imaging results achieved in a variety of specific disorders. There is particular emphasis on thin-section computed tomography since this technique facilitates the detection of early subclinical abnormalities.

MRI of the Heart and Vessels
378 pages
Description
In recent years magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has enriched the technological potential available for the characterization of cardiovascular pathologies, adding substantial advantages to other non-invasive techniques. This technique, which is intrinsically digital and has reduced operator dependency, allows the performance of image analysis in a quantitative and reproducible manner. The use of non-ionizing energy with the consequent absence of an environmental impact and of operator and patient biohazards makes MRI a winning technique when evaluating the risk – benefit ratio in comparison to other imaging methods. In virtue of its added diagnostic value and inherent refinements that allow construction of two- and three-dimensional images, MRI is gaining a primary role in the histopathological and physiopathological understanding of a large number of pathologies concerning the heart and vessels. This text is addressed both to MRI operators seeking specific technical information and to clinicians who wish to have a better understanding of the diagnostic and management advantages that MRI can offer.

Quantitative Analysis in Nuclear Medicine Imaging

Some algorithms are described and illustrated with some useful features and clinical applications. Other potential applications of quantitative image analysis such as image-guided radiation therapy are also discussed.

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Clinical Practice
Liver, Prostate, Pancreas, Kidney and Lymph Nodes
Pages: 63
Description
The value of ultrasound contrast agents (USCA) in everyday clinical practice depends on the pharmacokinetics, the signal processing, and the contrast-specific imaging modalities. Second-generation USCA, are blood pool agents that do not leak into the organ tissue to be examined but remain in the intravascular compartment increasing the Doppler signal amplitude during their dynamic vascular phase. Taking advantage of the stability of their microbubbles, they can withstand the acoustic pressure of insonation much better than first-generation contrast media, which results in an increased half-life of the agent and, consequently, in a prolonged diagnostic window. Concomitant with the improvement of contrast agents, different contrast-specific imaging modalities have been developed which, used in combination with USCA and a low mechanical index, allow continuous real-time grey-scale imaging. These recent technical improvements have opened new possibilities in the use of USCA in a variety of indications. Written by internationally renowned experts, the contributions gathered in this book give an overview of current and possible future new applications of USCA in routine and clinical practice.
